Among the striking mountains of the Garhwal Himalayas is Black Peak, the tallest mountain in the Saraswati Range located in the Ruinsara Valley. Locally known as Kalanag due to its resemblance to a black cobra’s head, it stands at an impressive height of 6,287 meters. Black Peak, part of the Bandarpunch massif (also called the Saraswati Range), includes three main peaks: White Peak or Bandarpunch II (6,102 meters), Bandarpunch I (6,316 meters), and Kalanag (6,287 meters). Black Peak is known for its challenging structure, making it a popular choice for serious mountaineers.
Surrounded by the majestic peaks of the Garhwal Himalayas, such as Swargarohini, Bhagirathi, Bandarpunch, and the Gangotri range, Black Peak offers breathtaking scenery. The trail passes through Govind National Park, which is rich in diverse flora and fauna. Along the route, trekkers experience stunning landscapes, from alpine meadows and pine forests to rocky moraines and glacial basins.
Black Peak provides a perfect balance of natural beauty and technical difficulty. One of the toughest parts of the climb is a 75-foot vertical ice wall with a 70-degree incline, which tests climbers on their way to the summit. The expedition also involves traversing crevassed snowfields, glaciers, and rocky terrains, while dealing with the challenges of high altitude. This climb requires mountaineering experience, knowledge of specialized equipment, and the ability to survive in extreme conditions. Therefore, it is recommended only for experienced climbers with certifications or significant high-altitude trekking experience.
